Luna By Ramon Esquivel: Discussion Questions

1) Are there any characters in Luna that remind you of yourself? In what ways do you relate to Soledad?

Example Answer:
When Soledad says “Do I have to go to school?” and her father responds “If you wanna build a spaceship someday, then yes.” I chuckled. I thought this was such a sweet moment between father and daughter that felt raw and real. I can relate to Soledad in dreaming big, in wanting to get right to those dreams and skip over the nerve-racking journey. But there's much to be found along the way.

   2) What is something that you've struggled with?

Example Answer:
Just as Soledad sometimes struggles with making new friends and being kind to others, I struggle with sharing and listening. I like to be a leader, to have control over situations, but I've learned that a good friend also is there to step back sometimes and make space for you.

   3) Who supports you?

Example Answer:
Luna is always there for Soledad, and my mom is always there for me. My mom gives me advice and helps me when I ask. It's important to have someone there for you because we cannot face the world on our own.

   4) What makes a good friend? Who is your best friend?

Example Answer:
A good friend is someone who is kind, who plays with you, shares, and listens. Someone who is always there for you. Luna is a good friend, like my best friend Kendall. She spends time with me and we always laugh together.

   5) What is your biggest takeaway from Luna?

Example Answer:
I learned that friendship is one of the best parts of life. That you have to reach out to others and put in effort for friends, hard work pays off. Soledad has trouble making new friends because she was always moving around, but Luna pushes her to take risks. Taking risks is courageous. It's important to remember that sometimes life gets complicated, things can be hard to process. Going one step at a time and remembering our impact outweighs our intents will guide us in making those choices.
